The Best Nest

Nests. There is a reason why I decided to name my blog “the Gilley nest.” Besides the fact that a hummingbird is my favorite animal, (but really all birds fascinate me; much to my Mom’s dismay, I had a habit of collecting nests and keeping them in my room when I was young- sorry Mom!) as a child, one of my all time favorite books was “The Best Nest.” It is about a Mama and Papa bird building, well, the best nest they can as their home. As a mommy-to-be, there is nothing that I want to do more than provide a loving and safe “nest” for my little family. So while my parents are currently experiencing (for the first time in 30 years) “empty nest syndrome,” I am just now building my nest for my future kiddos and making sure that ours is a nest full of love.

…speaking of nests….lets just say that “nesting” while pregnant is a very real thing. All you mothers out there know what I’m talking about. I am a mad woman on all fours scrubbing baseboards and folding and re-folding all the clothes in the house, stocking and re-stocking all the shelves in the closets and cabinets, bleaching the walls, etc. It’s amazing the productive activities you come up with doing when you’ve got a bun in the oven :)

Are We There Yet?

So, we had a little scare on Friday night, April 8th. As most of you know I actually went into labor…6 weeks early! I am blogging about it so that someday when I read back on this, I can remember how feisty little Lucy was in her final womb days :) I was sitting at home, writing in Lucy’s baby book about her shower I had a few weeks back, when all the sudden I started cramping really, really bad. Her ears must have been ringing and so she just wanted to come out and say hello to the woman who was thinking sweetly of her (mind you, I wasn’t thinking so sweetly of her a couple hours later when the nurses gave me a shot of Terbutalin to keep her inside me). Anyway, I called the doctor who told me to come in right away. All that front and back cramping (combined with the hard/random contractions my body has been having the past 6 weeks [not Braxton-hicks, but REAL contractions]- which led to my first order of bed rest) wasn’t normal. I then called Shawn and told him we had to go to the doctor but “I’m sure everything is fine and I’m just overreacting- we will only be there for a half hour or so.” Little did I know, all those cramps were actually me going into labor. Lucy and I got hooked up to all the monitors and after the doctor told me how irritated my uterus is for 34 weeks (as if I didn’t already know this) she also told me that Lucy is one wiggly baby. “Usually we don’t get this much movement from babies this late in pregnancy because they don’t have the room to wiggle- but yours just keeps stretching you out!” Oh Lucy…it’s one stubborn thing after another with you, isn’t it? I knew it all along. Before I could ever feel you, I knew I was going to have a little spit-fire on my hands. You sure are a stinker. In fact, you dropped head down too early as well- on April 1st! “Happy April Fool’s Day, Mom!” Technically, you weren’t supposed to drop for another 3 weeks. Ok, back to my labor. So after being monitored for about 2 hours, they told me I was having about 14-16 contractions an hour (one every 4-5 minutes) and they had to give me a shot that might not make me feel good. Understatement of the year! I thought I was going to die! I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t move but I couldn’t hold still at the same time. I felt like I was hyperventilating and it made me very cold! I told your Dad that he needed to go to the gas station across the street and get me some Spicy Cheetos and Beef Jerky while I was still strapped to the table to make me feel better. It helped a little, and the nurses thought it was silly :) Well, my body didn’t exactly respond to the Terbutalin the way they hoped. My contractions slowed down at first, but then resumed after about 45 minutes. So now I am on a Terbutalin pill that I need to take every 6 hours round the clock. Lots of work just to keep my bun in the over for a few days longer! I was also tested for a certain protein that they don't want me to have, and luckily I don’t have it, so we are guaranteed that Lucy will not be here for 2 weeks (as long as I take my pills and sit on the couch). So I will be plopped on our couch for the next little while and will probably facebook/blog stalk all of you even more than I already do :) Anything to keep my little baby healthy and happy, right? Now, if only she would return the favor…

We're Here!

Hi Family and Friends!
It took us awhile, but we have finally joined the blogging world. I just wanted to get our family site up and running! I am currently on "bed rest" and thought this would be a great time to start a blog so that we can stay connected to our loved ones who we can't be with on a daily basis. Shawn and I love you all and miss the ones we don't get to see often. Please follow us, or keep checking us out, as I will post about our lives along the way! We have some big changes coming up as you all know. We are going to welcome little Baby Lucy to our family very soon! She is wiggly and impatient and can't wait to see the world! We are so excited and feel so very loved and blessed to be bringing a perfect angel into our family.
XOXO
